Frequently asked questions for online video focus groups
How many respondents can be present in the video room at the same time?
The technical limit is 25 participants (respondents + moderators). The recommended size of an online focus group is 5-10 respondents.
How many focus groups are enought?
2 sessions are considered the minimum for basic outputs. If you want to discover more details, 3-4 focus groups are recommended. For more target groups you will need even more sessions.
Can respondents see the clients?
No, the clients are observers, they donāt use the webcam and only the moderator knows about their presence. Clients can type text messages to the moderator during the session.
What is the best length for a focus group?
The typical length of a video session is 60-120 minutes in Quallie. After 2 hours, participants can be tired and the quality of their feedback significantly decreases.
What is the best day to host a focus group session?
Most moderators conduct live focus groups in the middle of the week – Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays. On the other hand, Mondays, Fridays and weekends are less safe in terms of lower engagement of the group, higher drop-outs and even the project organization.
Can I conduct IDIs / individual interviews in your webcam group tool?
Yes, you can conduct IDIs, dyads, and triads, too. If you have more moderators, you can run many simultaneous individual interviews at the same time.
Does Quallie record the focus groups?
Yes, the recording is on by default. You will find the MP4 recording in the export section. If you donāt wish to record the session, you can easily disable the recording module. Learn more about focus group recordings.
Can I download and delete the recording manually?
Yes, if you want to delete a recording before the date of its automatic deletion, go to the Video recordings section and delete it manually.
Do I need respondentsā consent for the recording?
The privacy laws differ from country to country. For example in the EU ā the GDPR requires explicit consent from the respondent prior to the session. Learn more about GDPR for qualitative research.
Are video-based online focus groups better than text-based focus groups?
The video-based focus group is closest to a classic focus group. In some cases, a text chat can be a better option ā for example when you need to conduct an anonymous focus group, or when you plan to ask very sensitive topics.
